Johanson Design was started in 1953 and has ever since then maintained a high level of craftmanship as a platform for the company. Since Dan and Paul Johanson took over the company in the early nineteen nineties, it was decided to continue to develop designs dedicated to the ’Johanson Design style’ that is so well received all over the world today. They realized early on that the key to success was to combine furniture know-how with high quality designs says Paul Johanson.
The Johanson Design target group is very broad and worldwide. Almost everything is specified and purchased through architects, designers and dealers. It is mainly for contract use such as offices, retail shops, hotels, restaurants and ship interiors to name a few. Scandinavia and UK are the biggest markets followed by Benelux, France, Germany, Italy and USA.
Level - a height-adjustable bar stool inspired by an old studio stool from the 1930s. The material is polyurethane rubber, making it tough and easy to keep clean, while good foot support makes the stool comfortable to sit on.

Simon Pengelly
British designer Simon Pengelly’s design is characterised by a mix of minimalism, smart production-oriented thinking, timelessness and an expressiveness that ties in well with Johanson Design’s Scandinavian-style furniture.
His passionate desire to create production furniture with “soul” has resulted in a number of awards. Full of character, the Gap chair and the idiosyncratic Level bar stool are two of Simon’s creations that feature in the Johanson Design furniture collection.
Simon Pengelly was born in Henley in the UK in 1967. When he was eight he started making furniture in his father’s furniture workshop and won a prize for cabinetmaking at the age of 15. He went on to study at Rycotewood College and Kingston Polytechnic. Simon started Pengelly Design in 1993 and today is a product designer for some of the world’s foremost furniture manufacturers..
